Q&A with Amber King

Can I switch life insurance companies without losing coverage?

Answer: Yes you can as long as that policy stays active while the transition happens between companies. It could also depend on the type of life insurance it is and its cash value. It is best to work with an agent to try to keep the process moving smoothly.

What questions should a first-time life insurance buyer ask their agent?

Answer: What type of life insurance options do you have?

What happens if I have a life change like marriage/divorce/adoption/birth of children?

What happens if I get in a bind and can't pay my premium, what happens next?

When can I make changes?

How much life insurance do I need and how do I get it to fit my budget?

How do I find out if a deceased loved one had a life insurance policy?

Answer: The obvious first answer is look through desks and filing cabinets for important documents. If you know that they work with a local agent, ask them to see if they have it on record.

If you have access to previous employer, you may be able to reach out to them and see if they can help track it down.

If all else fails, you can always look it up through National Association of Insurance Commissioners provides a centralized, free tool to help authorized representatives and beneficiaries find policies. You will need to answer questions about the deceased and have supporting documents.

What's the difference between term and whole life insurance?

Answer: The easiest way to think about it is term is for a limited time. It takes less underwriting than whole life and once the term is done, the monthly rate can change when it renews depending on age, weight and health.

Whole life goes through a longer process for underwriting but will stay with you until age 100 or 120. This policy gains a cash value meaning it can be cashed in for money. The longer it is active the more cash value it has.

What documents do I need to prepare before meeting an agent?

Answer: A list of questions. Valid information like address, phone, email, mailing, who is the owner of the policy and who are we insuring. Driver's license numbers, social security numbers. List of beneficiaries and how you want the policy to be divided. The beneficiaries address and information.

How often should someone review or update their life insurance policy?

Answer: Often. This could depend on the person and their life changes. Since the insurance company will send out notices each year, that would be a good time to review any changes that you may have had like change of address or beneficiaries.
