Q&A with Josh Koon

What happens if my life insurance claim is denied?

Answer: There are some legitimate reasons that a claim may be denied (exclusions from the policy, lack of information, fraud) so understanding why the carrier denied the claim is the first step. Then, if you believe that the denial is wrong, you do have the opportunity to appeal. Typically, you will need to provide more information as to why you believe the claim is valid, and working with the agent and carrier can help bring about a more favorable outcome.

What is the most common mistake people make when buying life insurance?

Answer: The most common mistake people make when buying life insurance is not fully understanding what the life insurance is protecting against. Without a full analysis of what we are trying to take care of in the event of our death, we can't fully understand and appreciate our options for life insurance coverage. There are numerous variations of life insurance contracts, and most have great instances of application. But they are not all created equal, and fully understanding what you are looking to protect (and why) can help you select the right type, amount and carrier for the coverage.

Can I change my beneficiary on a life insurance policy?

Answer: If you are the owner of your policy, you can typically change the beneficiary whenever you like. There are some instances where something may disallow you to change beneficiaries (like a marital settlement agreement, for example), but otherwise you can update beneficiaries whenever it is necessary. In fact, it's a good practice to review your beneficiaries on life insurance policies and other accounts periodically, in case changes need to be made.

What is the DIME method for life insurance?
