What is group life insurance and how does it work?

Answered by 4 licensed agents

Typically group life insurance is offered by your employer and once you leave your job its over and you must find another option. The best option is to take what they offer and pick up another life insurance plan independently so that if you move on voluntarily or not you still have protection.

Group life insurance is exactly what it sounds like; it a single policy offered by an employer or organization that covers a large pool of people. Basic coverage is often free or low-cost, requires no medical exam, and pays a set cash benefit to your chosen beneficiary if you die while part of the group.

I only handle individual coverage so I’d need to refer you to my group experts. It’s not within my expertise to answer

Group life insurance is generally a policy provided by an employer. Usually there is little or no underwriting required to get coverage. As long as the employer pays the premium and you stay employed at that firm, you have coverage.

Important to remember: If you leave that company, the coverage almost always stops. Some policies have a conversion option, but not many. Also, many people think they don't need life insurance because they have it through their job. Be careful here. The benefit from employer-based insurance is most likely not enough to meet your family's actual needs.
