How do I find a trustworthy life insurance agent in my area?

Answered by 10 licensed agents

First is look for experience the individual should have at least 5 years in the industry full time. Second is there more listening and questions happening more than giving a solution right away. Last is ask someone you know for a referral of a good life agent not a insurance agent who mainly does home and auto or health. If you can not use trusted sources for researching and vetting a potential partner.

Finding a trustworthy life insurance agent starts with looking for someone who focuses on education and planning rather than simply trying to sell a product. A good agent should take the time to understand your goals, explain your options clearly, and help you determine the appropriate amount and type of coverage for your situation.

One of the best places to start is by asking friends, family members, financial professionals, or other trusted advisors for referrals. You can also check online reviews, verify state licensing, and look for agents with a strong reputation in the community. An agent's experience, responsiveness, and willingness to answer questions are often good indicators of the level of service you can expect.

As an independent agent, I represent virtually all major life insurance companies and focus exclusively on carriers that are rated A or better by the leading independent rating agencies. This allows me to compare multiple companies and help clients find the most appropriate combination of coverage, features, underwriting, and pricing without being limited to a single insurer's products.

When interviewing an agent, ask how many companies they represent, how they are compensated, what types of policies they recommend most often, and whether they will continue to provide service after the policy is issued. A trustworthy agent should be transparent, patient, and focused on helping you make an informed decision rather than pressuring you to buy quickly.

Ultimately, the right life insurance agent is someone who acts as a long-term advisor, helps you understand your options, and is committed to finding financially strong companies that will be there when your family needs them most.

A good place to start is by looking for an independent life insurance broker, not someone who only represents one company.

As a life insurance broker, I shop multiple insurance carriers to find my clients the best value based on their age, health, medications, lifestyle, habits, and hobbies. Every insurance company evaluates risk differently, so one carrier may charge significantly less than another for the exact same amount of coverage.

Think of it like shopping for car insurance. Instead of calling 10 different companies yourself, a broker compares them all for you and helps you find the best fit.

A trustworthy agent should also:

Explain your options without pressure.

Be transparent about costs and how they're paid.

Recommend what's best for your needs—not just the product that pays the highest commission.

Be available to answer questions long after the policy is issued.

To find a trustworthy life insurance agent, I'd start with a conversation, hopefully face to face, and make sure that the agent is interested in helping solve your need/concern. I would avoid someone who is hard selling a single product (perhaps the one that pays them the most commission). I also think it's reasonable to ask the agent for references. I've had several clients ask that of me and I provide their information to my existing clients who reach out and share their experience in working with me. My goal as a life insurance agent is to build relationships with clients, over time, as opposed to make a quick sale/transaction.

Don't just look for the cheapest policy or the first agent that appears online. Look for an agent who takes time to understand your goals, explains your options in plain English, and represents multiple insurance companies instead of pushing a one-size-fits-all solution.

The right life insurance agent should act as an advisor, not a salesperson. If you'd like a second opinion or have questions about your coverage options, I'd be happy to help.

For one, you should call them, they should not be calling you or having a robot confuse you. But for my family I preferred seeing and connecting to our agent/ advisor. My mother and grandparents all felt more at ease with a person they could understand, and could relate to. As a local agent, I see more often the confidence and security my clients have because I was able to meet them where they were or somewhere in town they felt most comfortable!!

It's best to look for independent agents or brokers. They have the best opportunity to shop around and find the best company at the best price for your needs. Captive agents typically sell for one specific company limiting your options.

Verify their license by looking them up on the state Department of Insurance website.

Ask for Personal Referrals: Word-of-mouth is highly valuable.

Interview Candidates: Don't settle for the first agent you speak with. A trustworthy agent will ask detailed questions about your health, income, and long-term financial goals. They will take the time to explain the differences between term and whole life insurance in plain English without pressuring you to buy.
