What is the life insurance grace period and what happens if you miss a payment?

Answered by 5 licensed agents

The grace period is typically 30 days after a missed payment. It gives you a window to catch up without losing coverage. If you pay within that time, you're all set. But if you miss it, your policy lapses and I won't be able to help you collect benefits. If you ever have trouble making a payment, just reach out and we can talk about your options.

A life insurance grace period is the extra time—usually about 30 days—you have to make a missed payment before the policy ends. If you pay during that time, the policy stays active; if you don’t, it may lapse and you could lose your coverage.

A life insurance grace period is a set window of time (typically 30 to 61 days) following a missed payment during which your policy remains fully active. If you pass away during this time, your beneficiaries still receive the death benefit, minus the overdue premium.

Depending on your insurer, you may incur a small late fee or interest charge for the delay.

The grace period is a set window of time after your premium due date during which your life insurance policy remains fully active, even though the payment is late. If something happens to you during this period, your beneficiaries are still legally entitled to the full death benefit payout.

Most life insurance policies have a 30 day grace period (think 1 month). This period starts from the day you premium is late.

If you haven't paid the premium during your grace period, the policy officially lapses and you no longer have that coverage or benefits from the lapsed policy.

If you want life insurance coverage, a new application is needed.
