Does life insurance cover suicide or accidental death?

Answered by 4 licensed agents

The answer is YES. Most policies state that after policy has been issued and cause of death is by suicide, policy will pay full death benefit but ONLY if the policy is 2 years old. If suicide occurs within the first 2 years of policy then there will be NO death benefit paid to the beneficiary.

Regarding accidental death there is no waiting period like the suicide clause. And some policies offer an Accidental rider and if taken the face amount will double if death is caused by an accident.

All insurers have a 2 year clause against suicide death they will not pay anything in the first two years. After that it is discretionary as to whether or not it will be paid. For accidental death there are stan alone policies for it and many carriers have it as an added rider for purchase on a policy.

This is a very sensitive subject, so I'll try to be as clear as I can be. Suicide is typically treated differently than an accidental death. Most policies will have a suicide clause, which is a period of time (1-3 years in most cases) that they will not pay if the insured dies by suicide.

Accidental death, on the other hand, is a great example of why we purchase life insurance. Usually, this would be covered immediately after the policy's effective date as long as there is nothing about the application or death that is contestable (e.g. if someone misrepresented something on their application that would have affected the application). If the accidental death occurs after the contestability period (usually 2 years) after the plan is in effect, then the policy usually cannot be contested. There are still exceptions that will vary from plan to plan (e.g. an accidental death that occur while committing a crime or during war, etc.).

Every state and plan can vary, so work with an agent to help guide you through these nuanced questions.

It may sound strange but life insurance does cover suicide after the statute of limitations has been fulfilled. Statute of limitations is 24 months.

Often there is an accidental death rider that can be placed on a life insurance policy that will pay additional face amounts in the event death was caused by an accident. In general, the accidental death riders are very reasonably priced for those that may want some additional coverage.
