What should someone with a pre-existing condition know about getting life insurance?

Having a pre-existing medical condition does not necessarily prevent you from qualifying for life insurance. In fact, many people with conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, cancer history, or other health concerns are able to obtain coverage. The key is understanding that different insurance companies evaluate health conditions differently.

As an independent agent, I work with virtually all major life insurance companies, and each carrier has its own underwriting guidelines. A condition that may result in a higher premium with one company could receive a much more favorable offer from another. This is why shopping multiple carriers is often especially important for individuals with health concerns.

To help identify the best options, we use a sophisticated algorithm that analyzes your age, health history, medications, lifestyle, and coverage needs. The algorithm compares available plans across multiple highly rated insurance companies and ranks them from the most appropriate to the least appropriate for your specific situation.

The most important thing is to be honest and complete when answering health questions on the application. Insurance companies routinely review medical records, prescription histories, and other health information during underwriting. Accurate information helps ensure that the policy is issued properly and that your beneficiaries will not encounter issues if a claim is filed.

The good news is that a pre-existing condition often means you need life insurance the most. With access to multiple carriers and a data-driven approach to finding the right fit, many applicants are surprised to learn that quality coverage is still available at a reasonable cost.

Carriers vary widely on their underwriting for pre-existing conditions. It's imperative that potential clients be very honest with their agent about conditions because the underwriters will find the medical history. The process is much smoother when all the cards are on the table.

That said, there are definitely options for people with pre-existing conditions. Many of the "simplified issue" carriers will work with these, though they might be graded in a way that premiums might be higher.

It's also worth noting that there are some "guaranteed issue" carriers, though be aware the premiums are typically higher.

They should work with an independent broker like me. I would get some questionnaires answered and send them through multiple companies to get the best offer. Different companies have different experiences and expertise with various conditions and situations. It is important to find the carrier that has experience with your personal situation an knows how to underwrite it fairly.

The biggest thing to know is that a pre-existing condition does not always stop you from getting covered. What matters is matching your health situation with the right company and the right type of policy. Don’t assume you’ll be declined — and don’t guess. Have an agent review your options first.

Getting life insurance with a pre-existing condition is possible, but you should expect to pay higher premiums and may need to explore alternative policy types. Insurers evaluate how recently you were diagnosed, the severity of the condition, and how well it is currently managed.

Depending on the level and type of policy requested we may have some health questions to answer. Recent diagnosis and drug list may impact rates or coverage

Just because you feel you have a pre-existing condition, that does not mean you do not qualify for life insurance. Some conditions are not a big deal unless certain circumstances are present. So always speak with an agent that knows underwriting and is credentialed with multiple companies.
