Should a stay-at-home parent have life insurance?

Answered by 7 licensed agents

Yes absolutely a stay at home parent should have life insurance. Even though the stay home parent may not be providing income they provide cohesion in the home. Should that person be gone there will be a need to have someone assist in place of them which will cost money to make happen.

100% - life insurance does NOT replace a person; it simply gives you the means to replace the job they are performing. A Stay at home parent - is probably the single biggest responsibility and most complicated job there is.

A stay at home parent should absolutely have a life insurance policy. Replacing the value of what a stay at home parent provides to a family is extremely high. Just the cost of daycare, transportation, and household maintenance is much more than most people think. The loss of a parent and spouse is hard enough, having to navigate the financial burden while grieving makes a hard situation even worse.

Absolutely. A stay-at-home parent often provides thousands of dollars worth of unpaid support to a family every month.

If something happened to them, the surviving spouse may suddenly need help paying for:

Childcare

Transportation

Housekeeping

Meals

After-school care

Time away from work

Life insurance for a stay-at-home parent isn’t about replacing a paycheck — it’s about replacing the value of everything they do for the family.

Many families underestimate how financially difficult that transition could be.

Even a modest life insurance policy can help provide stability during an already difficult time.

Absolutely! Just because they are not earning a paycheck, that does not mean the duties that they are performing daily are not valuable. Imagine having to pay someone for child care, transportation, cooking the meals, all of the jobs that would need to be filled in their absence. It adds up very quickly. Most companies will allow the stay-at-home parent to purchase an amount equal to or less than that of the working spouse.
