How do I find out if a deceased loved one had a life insurance policy?

Answered by 3 licensed agents

Shortest answer available in this scenario would be simply get to know your loved ones and see if they're willing to disclose their personal and financial business to family members or loved ones. I loved one for example could be your local pet shelter who could be named as the beneficiary. Beneficiary in general should be notified that they are in fact a beneficiary and to what amount or death benefit proceeds. It's simply called doing good business. An agent who is doing his job should be able to determine these issues in the event that a death claim is filed

The obvious first answer is look through desks and filing cabinets for important documents. If you know that they work with a local agent, ask them to see if they have it on record.

If you have access to previous employer, you may be able to reach out to them and see if they can help track it down.

If all else fails, you can always look it up through National Association of Insurance Commissioners provides a centralized, free tool to help authorized representatives and beneficiaries find policies. You will need to answer questions about the deceased and have supporting documents.

Start by gathering any financial records, checking bank statements for premium payments, reviewing mail and email, and contacting their employer to see if they had any group life insurance benefits. You can also search state unclaimed property databases and use the free policy locator service offered by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).

If you're still having trouble, reach out. I help families navigate situations like this and can point you in the right direction during an already difficult time.
