What is an IMO or FMO, and how do I choose the right one as a life insurance agent?

Individual marketing organization versus a Field marketing organization. They both have the same function but the difference is that an the FMO is bigger.

Basically, an IMO or FMO is the organization that supports insurance agents and brokers. They can help with things like carriers, products, training, underwriting, and getting business submitted.

There are a lot of them out there, so I think it’s important to find one that fits the way you want to do business. For me, I chose mine based not only on the support they provide, but also on their values and religious beliefs. As an example, Shepherds Financial checked all the boxes for me.

An IMO (Independent Marketing Organization) or FMO (Field Marketing Organization) serves as a bridge between independent insurance agents and insurance carriers. They can provide access to multiple carriers and products, along with contracting, training, case support, technology, marketing resources, and sometimes lead programs.

When choosing an IMO or FMO, I’d look beyond just commission levels. Consider the carriers they represent, quality of training and support, responsiveness, technology, lead opportunities, release policies, and whether they genuinely help you grow your business.

The right organization should feel like a business partner—not simply a place to submit applications. Ask questions, talk with agents who already work with them, and make sure their support and business philosophy align with the type of practice you want to build.

IMO is an Independent (Insurance) Marketing Organization typically found on the life and annuity side of insurance. FMO is a Fielding Marketing Organization typically specific to health and Medicare side of insurance. The purpose of these organizations is to be a go-between for resources to field agents with regard to contract acces, training, case support and marketing materials.
